Location & Hours

The Department of Special Collections is located in room A1713 of the Charles E. Young Research Library. Normal business hours are Monday - Saturday, 10 a.m. - 5 p.m. Hours are reduced during academic intersessions and holidays. Please check the Research Library schedule of hours on the UCLA Library website before planning your visit.

Access to Special Collections Materials

The UCLA Library's primary responsibility is to the students, faculty and staff affiliated with the University of California. However, the Library makes its resources available to others whenever possible and when it does not conflict with its primary mission. Accordingly, the UCLA Department of Special Collections welcomes all non-UC researchers 18 years or older.

Researchers are expected to abide by Reading Room Protocols which are designed to maintain the integrity of the collections, to ensure the preservation of the collections, and to provide for long-term access.

In order to protect and preserve the collections, materials administered by the department do not circulate, but are available in the Department's reading room.

For identification and security purposes, researchers working with the Department's collections must both present a valid UCLA Library Card or a valid UCLA student identification card and register at the Department's reference desk. Those eligible for Library cards may obtain them at the circulation desks of the following libraries: Arts, Biomedical, College, Management, Music, Science & Engineering; and the Young Research Library. Free Library Access cards are issued to individuals over the age of 18 with current government-issued photo identification.

Researchers not affiliated with UCLA, the University of California system, or with other UCLA contractual agencies may occasionally be asked to reschedule consulting the Department's collections, due to lack of reading room space.

Requesting Special Collections Materials in Advance

Many of the Department's collections are stored off-site, not in the Young Research Library. It takes time to bring the collections to the Department's Reading Room. If you have complete and accurate citations for the items you wish to consult, you are encouraged to page the items before your arrival.

Please contact the Reference Desk at 310 825-4988 by telephone no less than five (5) working days in advance of your visit or by submitting an email request to: speccoll-paging@library.ucla.edu. Please be sure to include a phone number with your request, as we may need to contact you before you arrive.

Paging Limitations

  • Due to heavy reader and researcher use, requests to use archival and manuscript materials must be limited to 5 boxes per day. Readers will be notified of any paging limits before they visit the Department.
  • Retrieval of on-site books is limited to 5 per hour.

Special Accommodations

Researchers requesting special accommodations are asked to contact the Department's public services staff at least five working days in advance at: 310/825-4988. Proxy cards are available. For further information, inquire at any circulation desk or visit the UCLA Library Website
