The UCLA Library
Invites you to the Bonnie Cashin Lecture featuring
Peter Richardson
entitled
ALWAYS IN
FASHION?
Carey McWilliams, California Radicalism, and the Politics
of Cool
Described by historian Kevin
Starr as “the single finest non-fiction writer on California—ever,"
McWilliams (1905-80) is now virtually unknown to Californians, let alone
to readers across the country. Yet a review of his remarkable life and
prodigious work as an author, activist, attorney, and editor leads to
a surprising conclusion: this brilliant Los Angeleno was the most versatile
American public intellectual of the twentieth century.
Richardson will discuss his book American Prophet: The Life and Work
of Carey McWilliams and consider McWilliams's style, influence, and
critical fortunes more than a half century after his most productive period
as an author.
