Searching New Grove Online

The New Grove Dictionary of Music and Musicians, 2nd edition, is available in the traditional printed format in the Music Library's reference collection, shelved as ML 100 .N48 2001, and as a World Wide Web site called Grove Music. The online version includes all the content of the fist twenty-seven volumes of the printed editon as wll as Web links and multimedia files. (Some illustrations in the print version are not included in the online version at this time.) Grove reports that Grove Music will be updated quarterly and eventually include other music publications and Web sites produced by Grove. (The New Grove Dictionary of Opera has already been incorporated.) The number of links to related Web sites and multimedia files will also increase.

The UCLA subscription to Grove Music allows for five simultaneous users. If you attempt to connect and are asked for a password, wait a short period and try again.

Searching

There are four ways to use Grove Music: Article Search, other types of searches, Browse, and Explore. You may use the truncation or wild card characters * and ? in your searches: "sonat*" will search sonata, sonatina, and sonate; "Sm?th" will search Smith and Smyth. By default, searches are fuzzy: searching "France" will retrieve Frances, Francais, and Francesca, etc.

The Article Search box at the top of every screen allows for searching specific areas or article sections by title ("Beethoven", "Gamelan", "Rhythm".) You are not searching the full text of the Dictionary, only article and section titles. If your search retrieves more than one article or section, the entries are ranked, and you may click to the one most relevant to your search.

The Search section of the screen provides for searching Grove Music five other ways: Full Text, Biographies, Bibliographies, Links, and Contributors.

After selecting Full Text, you are provided with a search box and the option to select three types of searches: concept, pattern, and Boolean.  Each search option has a description and example of the type of search.

Use the Biographies section to retrieve names by birth date, birth place, death date, occupation, etc. (You cannot search by name here; use Article Search.)

Bibliographies search allows for searching the bibliographical sections of the articles. You may search by a name ("Bruno Nettle") or a term ("ophicleide") to retrieve articles by or about Bruno Nettle or with the word "ophicleide" somewhere in the citation.

Contributors search allows you to search for the names of contributors. The search returns a clickable list of articles by the name you have searched.

The Links search provides searching Grove Music's collection of Web links which open in a new browser window.

The Browse feature allows you to browse alphabetical lists of articles by article name. Browse gives access to the lists of abbreviations used in articles and bibliographies as well as the library holding sigla.  The browseable list of contributors is not clickable; use the Contributor search as explained above.

The Explore feature is not yet fully implemented but will provide a way to explore the treatment of ideas or terms throughout the dictionary.
