UCLA Libraries Music Library Special Collections Location & Access

Location & Access

The Music Library Special Collections are located in Room B425 of Schoenberg Hall. The collections are open 10:00 am to 5:00 pm, Monday - Friday, by appointment, during all academic quarters (Fall, Winter, Spring, Summer). The collections are not open on Saturday, Sunday, or University holidays. Hours vary during Intersession. Check the Library hours webpage for updated information.

For an appointment email arts-speccoll@library.ucla.edu, or call (310) 825-7253. Most archival materials are held off-site, so appointments are recommended. We can only accomodate walk-in patrons as staffing and space allow.

Information and Procedures

Music Library Special Collections houses materials that are rare or unique, fragile, or require special handling. In the interest of preserving and protecting these materials we ask that the following procedures be observed:

  • Materials held in the Music Library Special Collections do not circulate.
  • Use of the collections requires registration once per year, in addition to a current University library card and supporting photo identification. Non-UCLA patrons may apply for a UCLA Library reference card free of charge with proper identification.
  • Call slips must be completed in full for each item requested. Requested items are retrieved from the closed stacks and brought to the reading area by library staff. No material will be paged after 4:15 p.m.
  • An electronic piano is available for use with Special Collections materials only.
  • Only pencil, paper, and reference materials are to be used in the reading area. Storage is provided for briefcases and other personal effects.
  • All materials must remain on the reading room tables or on the electronic piano during use. Nothing may be placed on this material during its use; for example, do not write notes on paper resting on library materials. Books must not be placed face down with the pages open.
  • Archival collections (manuscripts, etc.) have been organized by library staff. It is important to preserve the order of archival materials for future researchers.
  • When work is completed, materials are to be returned to the desk attendant, who will check them in.

Copying Services

All copying is mediated; photocopying and sound reproduction services are provided by library staff. Self-service copying is not available. Arrangements may be made to reproduce materials according to Music Library guidelines. Due to the rarity and fragility of some items and because of copyright considerations, all copy requests will be reviewed by staff.

The following formats for duplication are available:

  • Photocopy
  • Microfilm, and microfilm copyflow
  • Photograph or slide
  • Digital scan
  • Analog cassette tape

A fee schedule is available upon request. To request copies by mail, print out and complete the Photocopy Request and Copyright Compliance form.

Reference Services

Reference service is available during the open hours of UCLA Music Library Special Collections.
