1.     Library’s Japanese Collections:

 

·        General: The UCLA East Asian Library’s Japanese collection is strong in Buddhism, fine arts, literature, history, and folklore, with recent growing strength added in modern intellectual history and cultural studies. The collection also includes ca. 800 titles of pre-modern publications and manuscripts. Recent additions include a collection of books originally belonged to the late Prof. Marius B. Jansen (1922-2000), ca. 2,000 volumes on Japanese history, and another belonged to the late Mr. Jiro Tokuyama (1919-2001), over 2,600 volumes in business management, comparative cultures, and international relations.

·        NDL OPAC: An online catalog of the National Diet Library of Japan. The database is also available as a part of Digital Archive Portal.

·        WebcatPlus: A union catalog of NACSIS-CAT member institutions. The database is also available as a part of GeNii.

·        Union List of Japanese Serials and Newspapers: A union list of Japanese serials and newspapers held by academic libraries in North America including 8,323 titles held by 44 libraries (the data not updated since Sept. 30, 2000).

Books and Journals in print:

 

·        Books.or.jp: The database, provided by the Japan Book Publishers Association, contains information of Japanese books currently available on the market.

·        政府刊行物・官報・官報公告: The website provides much information about government publications as well as search capabilities.

·        日本の古本屋: With many participants from Zenkoku Koshosekisho Kumiai Rengokai, the site offers the largest database of secondhand books in Japan.

·        Jimbou Book Town: Provides information about Kanda Book Town, the largest center of secondhand books in Japan.

 

 

3.  How to Find Journal/Magazine Articles

 

·        MagazinePlus*: Provided by Nichigai Associates. Indexes to journal articles since 1948 (NDL Japanese Periodicals Index); popular Japanese magazines since 1980; and essays in festschrift, conference papers, and books, annuals, and research reports published by research organizations between 1945 and 2003.

·        雑誌記事索引 NDL Japanese Periodicals Index: Indexes to academic periodicals held by the National Diet Library of Japan covering all subjects since 1948 to present, mostly in Japanese and some English journals published in Japan.

·        論文情報ナビゲーター CiNii: Citation Information by NII: CiNii is part of GeNii. Indexes to journal articles (including NDL Journal Periodicals Index) with full-text access provided to ca. 1,500 journals.

·        占領期雑誌記事情報データベース: Created by the Institute of 20th Century Media/ Committee for the Preservation of Magazines Published during the Occupation. Indexes to magazine articles published between 1945 and 1949 and included in the Prange Collection, University of Maryland, originally belonged to the Civil Censorship Detachment, a unit within GHQ.

·        明治・大正・昭和前期雑誌記事索引集成: Provides an author index to a print publication Meiji, Taishō, Shōwa zenki zasshi kiji sakuin shūsei (Kōseisha), which reproduces various periodical indexes originally published during the Meiji period (1868-1912) through 1948.

4.  How to Find Newspaper Articles

 

·        UCLA Newspaper Holdings Summary 

·        FACTIVA*: Access (mostly full text) to nearly 9,000 business and general news sources, including U.S. and international newspapers, magazines, and wire services. Includes several major Japanese newspapers such as Mainichi shinbun and Yomiuri shinbun, as well as English newspapers on Japan including Daily Yomiuri, Mainichi Daily News, and Japan Times.

·        テーマ別調べ方--新聞 NDL’s Guide to Japanese Newspapers: Comprehensive list of Japanese newspaper-related resources, prepared by the National Diet Library of Japan. Helpful to locate newspaper titles and their holdings in Japan.

·        毎日フォトバンクMainichi Photo Bank: A digital photographic archive offered by Maichi Shinbunsha. Photos are accompanied by information on the date and place the pictures were taken, the date that photos appeared in papers, etc.

·        戦前期新聞経済記事文庫Newspaper Article in Digital Version: A digital version of the newspaper clippings collection developed by Kobe University, covering the late Meiji period to the prewar era (1943), with subject focus on economy, business and industries.

·        戦前日本在住朝鮮人関係新聞記事検索データベース: Provided by Prof. Naoki Mizuno, Kyoto University. Indexes to newspaper articles related to Korean nationals living in Japan that were published in Japan and Korea during the prewar period.

·        Press Net: Provided by the Japan Newspaper Publishers & Editors Association, the website offers a variety of information related to newspaper industry.

·        Japan Times Online: Provides keyword search mechanism for news since January 1999 published on Japan Times.

 

 

5.  How to Find Japanese Web Sites and Databases

 

·        Dnavi: A database of the databases available on the Internet, created by the National Diet Library of Japan.

·        PAIR  (Portal to Asian Internet Resources): A portal site to Asian resources on the Internet, a cooperative project of the Ohio State University Libraries, the University of Minnesota Libraries, and the University of Wisconsin-Madison Libraries.

·        Portal to the World: Japan: Selected Internet Resources: A collection of Internet resources on Japan selected by the Library of Congress experts.

·        大学Webサイト資源検索: An index to digital resources produced by Japanese universities, provided by the National Institute of Informatics.

·        インターネット学術情報インデックス: An index to scholarly resources on the Internet, provided by the University of Tokyo Library and the Information Technology Center.

·        Ariadne: Resources for Arts and Humanities: An extensive collection of links to web sites in the field of arts and humanities. The resources are classified in 21 subcategories.

·        WARP (Web Archiving Project): As a project by the National Diet Library to preserve useful web information resources, it provides access to selected archived web sites and electronic journals produced by Japanese government agencies, universities, and other public institutions and organizations.

·        Wayback Machine: The largest internet archive site based in the U.S. It also includes some Japanese sites.

 

 

6.  Reference/Research

 

·        JapanKnowledge*: Provides easy access to a variety of Japanese reference sources including encyclopedias and dictionaries, as well as to full text of the monographic series Tōyō Bunko (Heibonsha), and the weekly magazine Shūkan ekonomisuto.

·        Rikai: Created by Todd David Rudick, a software engineer in Tokyo, utilizing the resources made available by Jim Breen and his EDICT Project. This is a program for learning Japanese, which provides readings and definitions of Chinese characters in English.

·        NCC Information Literacy Resources: A variety of resources related to Japanese electronic resource instruction including guides and lesson plans is provided by the North American Coordinating Council on Japanese Library Resources (NCC).

·        テーマ別調べ方案内: A collection of guides to research in various subjects and special materials, provided by the National Diet Library.

·        Pathfinder Bank: Indexes to pathfinders (information search tools on specific topics) provided by the Japan Association of Private University Libraries.

·        実践女子大学図書館図書・雑誌検索ページ: Provides guides to useful Internet resources, classified in such categories as reference tools, books, journals and newspapers, articles, etc.

·        Kaken: A database of the research projects funded by the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science, and Technology (MEXT, 文部科学省) and the Japan Society for the Promotion of Science (JSPS, 日本学術振興会). Covers the research topics funded for 1997-2005 and the research results for 1985-2002.

·        研究開発支援総合ディレクトリReaD: Directory Database of Research and Development Activities: Maintained by the Japan Science and Technology Agency, ReaD provides information on research institutes, researchers, research projects, and research resources in Japan.

·        Academic Society Home Village: Supported by the National Institute of Informatics, this page provides links to home pages of academic societies in Japan.

·        Link to Japanese Think Tanks:  Provided by NIRA (National Institute of Research Advancement). Links to home pages of think tanks in Japan.

Anthropology/Archaeology/Art

·        文化遺産オンライン Cultural Heritage Online: The database is compiled in cooperation with museums and related organizations in Japan under the auspices of the Agency for Cultural Affairs and the Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications. It contains brief explanations and images of cultural assets. You can browse by time periods, object categories, and geographical regions.

·        国立歴史民俗博物館 National Museum of Japanese History: The museum offers various bibliographic and full text databases.

 

Buddhism/Religion/Philosophy

·        インド学仏教学論文データベース Indian and Buddhist Studies Treatise Database (INBUDS): A bibliographic database provided by the Japanese Association of Indian and Buddhist Studies. Covers articles from academic bulletins, collected research essays, etc., since 1952.

·        花園大学国際禅学研究所 International Research Institute of Zen Buddhism, Hanazono University: Several databases including Zenseki Dētabēsu are available, from which many texts of Zen Buddhism are offered for download.

·        Machine-readable text-database of the Taisho Tripitaka (the TAISHO SHINSHU DAIZOKYO): Provided by the Association for Computerization of Buddhist Texts (ACBUT). The Association attempts to make Buddhist texts of Taishō Shinshū Taizōkyō (v. 1-85) available on the WWW to any researchers in the world.

·        哲学・倫理学・宗教学関係国内リンク集Philosophy/Ethics/Religious Studies WWW List in Japan: Provided by Kiyonori Nagasaki, Lecturer, Yamaguchi Kenritsu Daigaku. Organizes links in the categories of research institutions, academic societies, texts/databases, academic journals, etc.  

 

Economics/Political Sciences 

·        Enhancing Gateway to Economic Library (ENGEL): A subject gateway to digital resources in economics, provided by the Library of Economics, University of Tokyo.

·        電子政府の総合窓口 E-Gov: Gateway site to locate the government related information.  The website facilitates to utilize various information available at home pages of government agencies of Japan.   

·        統計データ・ポータルサイトPortal Site of Statistical Data in Japan: A portal to official statistics made available by the Japanese government. 

·        日本の国会・世界の議会: The webpage, provided by the National Diet Library, includes useful resources on the Diet of Japan, including 国会会議録検索システム: accesses to the minutes of the Diet since May 20, 1947; 日本法令索引: indexes to Japanese constitution, laws, government and ministerial ordinances, and bills; and 近現代日本政治関係人物文献目録: provides bibliographies for Japanese persons active in the field of politics since 1868. 

·        Documents originally held at the Japan Document Center, Library of Congress: The Japan Document Center (1992-2000) collected over 5,000 documents (mostly in Japanese) of grey literature on Japan, originally issued between 1993 and 1999. Its database contains English abstracts of the documents and researchers can request copy of the original documents.

·        政府資料等普及調査会: The web site of the Government Data Research Center of Japan provides a variety of useful information including recently produced government documents.

·        Nippon-Net: Links to official home pages of Japanese local governments from prefecture to city level and provides quick access to information in the home pages by keyword search ("Chiiki Hakken").

·        Japanese Legal Research at the University of Washington: The web site, prepared by Rob Britt, Japanese Legal Materials Specialist, University of Washington, provides guides and useful links for Japanese legal research.

·        データベース「世界と日本」"The World and Japan" Database Project: Provided by the Institute of Oriental Culture, University of Tokyo; the website offers several databases, full texts of important documents, and links related to international relations.

·        法政大学大原社会問題研究所  Ohara Institute for Social Research, Hosei University: The website of the Institute offers various databases and a collection of useful links to resources of labor and social movements in Japan.

·        Roper Center, Japanese Data Archive: The Center has developed "the only comprehensive database of Japanese public opinion data," JPOLL (registration required), which contains more than 10,000 public opinion questions and the respective responses from Japan's major survey research sources. These studies cover social, political, and economic topics throughout the current decade.

·        教育系電子資料ナビゲイションシステム E-Topia: A subject gateway to a variety of  information related to education, created by Tokyo Gakugei University Library.

 

History 

·        国立公文書館アジア歴史資料センター Japan Center for Asian Historical Records (JACAR), National Archives of Japan: A digital archive of modern historical records related to Asia held by the National Archives of Japan, the Diplomatic Record Office of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, and the Library of the National Institute for Defense Studies, National Defense Agency.

·        国立公文書デジタルアーカイブ・システムNational Archives of Japan Digital Archive: Provides access to the descriptions and digitized images of the historical records preserved by the National Archives of Japan. Some Important Cultural Properties and other materials of historical importance held at the National Archives of Japan are viewable at the Digital Gallery.

·        東京大学史料編纂所データベース: Includes a number of useful databases such as the index to Dai Nihon shiryō, and full text search databases of Dai Nihon komonjo, Dai Nihon kokiroku, and Heian ibun, and Online Glossary of Japanese Historical Terms.

·        国際日本文化研究センター(日文研)データベース Nichibunken Databases: The International Research Center for Japanese Studies (Nichibunken) provides a variety of useful databases related to Japanese studies, including full-texts, graphic images, biographical data, bibliographical data, directories, and indexes, which cover a wide range of subjects including art, geography, history, literature, and social sciences.

·        Japanese Historical Maps, East Asian Library, University of California, Berkeley: Represented in this online collection are the images of maps and books from the Japanese Historical Map Collection of Japan and the world which was acquired by the University of California from the Mitsui family in 1949, and is housed on the Berkeley campus in the East Asian Library.

·        Japanese Old Photographs in Bakumatsu-Meiji Period: Provided by the Nagasaki University Library. The Library's old photograph collection includes ca. 6,000 items.

·        Japanese War Crimes, The National Archives: The Nazi War Crimes and Japanese Imperial Government Records Interagency Working Group (IWG) presents a new reference book Researching Japanese War Crimes Records: Introductory Essays and an electronic records finding aid that will help researchers locate and use the thousands of new and extant files in the National Archives related to the war in the Pacific.

 

Language / Literature

·        国立国語研究所 National Institute for Japanese Language: Provides research reports and reference tools on Japanese language studies.

·        みんなの教材サイト: This site, organized by Japan Foundation Japanese Language Institute, Urawa, offers language teaching materials and information that Japanese language instructors can use to prepare lessons.

·        Selected Links on Japanese Language Instruction: A collection of links prepared by the Japanese language instructors at the Japan Foundation Japanese Language Institute, Urawa.

·        Linguistics and Language-Related Web Sites in Japan: Maintained by GOTOO Hitosi, Associate Professor of Linguistics in the Department of Linguistics, Tohoku University; has many links to useful sites in the field of linguistics and language studies.

·         国文学研究資料館データベースNational Institute of Japanese Literature Databases: The Institute provides several useful databases in classical Japanese literature, including full texts such as Nihon Koten Bungaku which reproduces the texts published in Nihon koten bungaku taikei (Iwanami Shoten, 1957-1967). The website also provides access to Nihon Kotenseki Sōgō Mokuroku, and the Union Catalogue of Early Japanese Books in Europe compiled by Prof. Peter F. Kornicki.

·        近代デジタルライブラリー: A collection of full text works published during the Meiji period and owned by the National Diet Library.

·        青空文庫: A collection of full text Japanese literary works, listed by title and the author name. 

·        東洋文庫 (via JapanKnowledge)*: The Heibonsha series Tōyō bunko is digitized and  available to read in PDF format via JapanKnowledge. 

·        日本語テキストイニシアチブJapanese Text Initiative: Under a collaborative effort by the University of Virginia Library Electronic Text Center and the University of Pittsburgh East Asian Library, a large number of texts of classical and modern Japanese literature have become available on the Web with keyword search capabilities.

·        日本文学翻訳書誌検索 Japanese Literature in Translation Search: This bibliographic database maintained by the Japan Foundation succeeds the print publication of Japanese literature in foreign languages 1945-1995 published in 1997 by the Japan P.E.N. Club; covers translations of Japanese literary works in a variety of languages.

·        Premodern Japanese Texts and Translations: A bibliography of translations from classical Japanese up to about 1600, including also works written in kanbun and Chinese.
