Summer 1999 Exhibits

America the Bountiful: Classic American Food from Antiquity to the Space Age June 30 - September 17, 1999

A traveling exhibit from the University of California, Davis chronicles through paintings, lithographs, photographs and artifacts, the development of American food selection and preparation covering ten time periods in U.S. history. Curated by UC Davis nutritional geographer Louis Grivetti, the focus is on actual stories of men and women of each historical era as they describe their food and what they ate.
	Eleven free standing exhibit cases cover these topics and time periods: Bountiful Gifts, the maize story Remote antiquity to 1565 Birth of a Nation, the first Thanksgiving feast 1565-1776 Westward Ho, baked beans origins of a classic American dish, 1776-1848

	California Here We Come, the 1st apple trees in the Pacific Northwest, 1848-1861 A Nation Divided, pork the American staff of life, 1861-1865 Reconstruction and Growth, how the hamburger came about, 1865-1910 Best of Times, Worst of Times, bread and sourdough, 1910-1941

World War II, how to cook a wolf 1941-1945 Cold War and Social Upheaval, the doomsday diet 1945-1976 Bicentennial to Tercentennial 1976-2076 Each case includes a list of important inventions and events related to food and the food industry in the United States.

Karen Blixen / Isak Dinesen Exhibited May - June 1999. This traveling exhibition celebrating the life and literature of Karen Blixen was sponsored by the Scandinavian Section of the UCLA Germanic Languages Department and was courtesy of the Danish Consulate in Los Angeles.

"A More Perfect Union Japanese Americans and the United States Constitution," a travelling exhibition for libraries organized by the American Library Association and the National Museum of American History (NMAH) of the Smithsonian Institution. Exhibited October 30 - December 18, 1997.
