Amazing vocals filled the Rotunda as Rafael Sanchez led top vocalists from UCLA's Department of Music, the Gluck Fellows Vocal Quartet, in a program comprised of American spirituals and sacred music.

Payam Larijani returned for his last concert in Powell before graduating. He was joined by fellow guitarists Jason Jones and Jan Pochop in two ensemble pieces, followed by solos of works composed by artists such as Vivaldi, J.S. Bach, Luys Milan, Aguado, Satie, Villa-Lobos, Narvaez and Yuquijiro Yocoh.

Audience members were treated to a traditional brass gong ensemble called kulintang from the southern Philippines and Mindanao, and dance, led by ethnomusicology doctoral student Eleanor Lipat. Doctoral student Christi-Anne Castro led string and guitar music called Rondalla which uses guitar and string instruments like European mandolins.

Powell Library South Courtyard

Director and ethnomusicology graduate student Amy Wooley led a lively performance during a pleasant breezy late afternoon with the audience seated on the South Courtyard lawn. The award-winning group performed a variety of instrumental and vocal American old-time string music from places like North Carolina and the Appalachians.
