Find Useful Articles Using Expanded Academic ASAP

What's in it?
  • Magazine & journal articles from 2600 periodicals on a variety of topics (1980-present).
  • Why use it?
  • To find magazine & journal articles on a variety of research topics.
  • To find useful search words for information research.
  • Get Started Start at the UCLA Library Homepage:
  • Click on the Search and Find button on the left.
  • Click on Article Databases
  •  
  • Choose Expanded Academic ASAP from the list of Frequently Used Databases.
  • Search
  • Click on Advanced Search in the left-hand column
  • Type search words & click on Search - example:
  • Find More
  • Use fewer search words.
  • Find Less
  • Use more search words.
  • Display Results
  • Pick a useful article.
  • Click on the link to the right of VIEW or just under it.
  • Focus Search
  • View a useful article or the citation for it.
  • Scroll down almost to the bottom, to View other articles linked to these subjects
  • Click on VIEW under a useful subject.
  •  

    Evaluate Results Sift through results to find the most useful items, by answering these questions:
    • Who wrote it? Expertise?
    • When was it published?
    • For books, who published it?
    • For articles, in what publication did it appear?
    Get Articles
    Online
  • Click on citation links with on the left
  • Or, click on
  • Note: PDF = scanned article supplied by periodical publisher
  • Mark Items
    to Print or
    Email

  • Click on View to the left of number of ciations.
  • Click in the box to the left of each item you want to print or email.
  • Click on View Mark List in the left hand column, to see your list of selected items.

  • Look up the periodical name in the UCLA Library Catalog (http://catalog.library.ucla.edu/)
  • Find the library name & call number or click on link for online access.
  • OR, click on
  • A new window provides links to full-text and/or to the MELVYL Catalog

    Tips... 1. at the tope of the screen means you can bookmark your search results to use later.
    2. Want to look up singular, plural or root of a word? Truncation & "Wildcard" symbols:
    • Any number of characters: *
      EXAMPLE: child*
    • One character: ?
      EXAMPLE: wom?n
    3. Save time - see if a periodical is indexed:
    • Click on the Title List in left-hand column.
    • Press Ctrl-F simultaneously, type the periodical name (e.g., Newsweek) in the Find what box, & click Find next.
