Finding Books by Subject Using the UCLA Library Catalog

  1. In the Web browser's Address/Location box, type http://catalog.library.ucla.edu, then press Enter on your keyboard.

  2. To search by subject headings, enter two or three words that describe the topic in the search terms box on the Basic Search screen, select Subject List on the pull-down menu, then click on the Search button.  The results will be a list of subheadings:
    • To see records for items that have this heading, click the subject heading.
    • Click to be directed to a related heading.
    • Click to read a description of the heading.
    • Click on the item's Title link to view the location and call number.
  3. If the subject search produces few or no results, try a Keyword search. This will search the author, title, and notes as well as subject terms in any order. Type two or three key words that describe the topic in the search terms box on the Basic Search screen, select Keyword from the pull-down menu, then click on the Search button.  The results will be a list of titles.  When you find a title of interest, click on its Title link, look at the subjects listed for the item, then click on appropriate subjects to find more items on that topic.
  4. On an individual record, scroll down to see the call number and location.

  5. Click to end your UCLA Library Catalog session.

  6. To browse the Biomedical Library's book stacks by topic, see list of shelving locations by subject.
