Policies & Use

Hours

The History & Special Collection Division of the Louise M. Darling Biomedical Library is open to researchers Monday through Friday, 8:30 to 4:30, normal holidays excepted. For the most current information on hours, please call 310/825-6940.

Research

The collection, which consists of primary, secondary, and tertiary literature, is open to all users with a valid UCLA library card. The histories, biographies and journals in the history of medicine and history of biology field circulate to users depending on the category of library card possessed. The books in the reference collection do not circulate, but are available for consultation all the hours the Biomedical Library is open. The histories and biographies in the secondary collection are also available for consultation and circulation during all the Biomedical Library's hours. Primary materials (printed books, manuscripts and records, prints and portraits, and museum objects) are considered rare and do not circulate, but may be requested using a Reference Card, which is available free.

Use of Materials

Rare materials are used in a monitored reading room.

Rules governing the use of the collection have been instituted to protect and preserve valuable materials. Requests for photocopies of rare materials will be reviewed by a staff member to assess the effect of copying on the material. Arrangements for the production of photographs, slides, microfilm, and the like may also by made through the Division's staff.

Fees

The UCLA Special Collection libraries are committed to providing basic "room use" access to the collections free of charge. There are fees for photocopying, photography, digitizing, and microfilming. Readers, who are not faculty, students, or staff at UCLA, should inquire as to fees.

Location

The History and Special Collections Division occupies quarters on the fourth floor of the Biomedical Library which is in the north east corner of the Center for the Health Sciences.
