Awards, Fellowships, and Research Opportunities
Center for Primary Research and TrainingThe UCLA Library created the Center for Primary Research and Training to integrate special collections materials more fully into the teaching and research mission of the university. Launched in the Charles E. Young Research Library Department of Special Collections, the center provides a substantive educational experience for graduate students by training them in archival methods, matching them with unprocessed collections, and thus making accessible lesser-known collections. Center for Primary Research and Training PlusThe Center for Primary Research and Training Plus expands the original center’s concept to encompass Performing Arts Special Collections and to offer employment for an entire academic year. Charles Donald O’Malley Short-Term Research FellowshipsThe Charles Donald O’Malley Short-Term Research Fellowships support investigation into the history of medical thought and healing practice and art from the earliest times to the recent past and are open to U.S. citizens and legal residents engaged in graduate-level, postdoctoral, or independent research. Funded by the David Geffen School of Medicine and the Louise M. Darling Biomedical Library History and Special Collections for the Sciences, two fellowships are awarded annually of up to $1500 to defray travel and residence costs for research conducted in UCLA special collections. James and Sylvia Thayer Short-Term Research FellowshipsThe James and Sylvia Thayer Short-Term Research Fellowships facilitate access to special collections materials for researchers and scholars residing outside of the Los Angeles area. The holdings of the Louise M. Darling Biomedical Library History and Special Collections for the Sciences, Performing Arts Special Collections, Charles E.Young Research Library Department of Special Collections, and University Archives include primary resource materials across all disciplines. Robert B. and Blanche Campbell Student Book Collection CompetitionThe Robert B. and Blanche Campbell Student Book Collection Competition offers UCLA undergraduate and graduate student book collectors prizes for their collections ranging from $150 to $500. UCLA Library Prize for Undergraduate ResearchThe UCLA Library Prize for Undergraduate Research is a new prize honoring the best research produced by UCLA undergraduate students. Two awards are given: first place receives an award of $750, and honorable mention receives an award of $300. University Librarian’s Undergraduate FellowshipThe University Librarian’s Undergraduate Fellowship is a new fellowship open exclusively to undergraduate students working on departmental honors projects or other comprehensive research projects in art history, classics, comparative literature, or English.
