About

UCLA faculty with active campus appointments can request a carrel on floors 3-5 of the Charles E. Young Research Library. These carrels have a desk and chair, and some have access to electrical outlets. We cannot provide additional furniture, lighting or access to outlets.

Due to high demand and a limited number of carrels, two or three individuals may be assigned to each carrel. Library staff will aim to assign carrels to individuals with compatible schedules. Faculty with a carrel assignment can authorize access to their graduate research assistants and Ph.D. students.

Carrels can be requested using the form below.

Faculty Carrel Terms of Use

  • Carrel assignments are made for a maximum of one year and expire on October 31. Renewal notifications are emailed to faculty 30 days before expiration. A renewal request can be made by replying to the email before the expiration date. All expired carrels will be cleared and assigned to other faculty.
  • All keys are the responsibility of the faculty member and must be returned by the expiration date. If the carrel has not been renewed and the key is not returned, a $120 fee will be issued. This fee will impact users' ability to renew and borrow other library materials. The fee will be waived upon the key's return.
  • The Library assumes no responsibility for items lost or stolen from faculty carrels.
  • Library material stored in the carrels must be checked out. Carrels are inspected regularly, and uncharged materials will be removed.
  • Storage of food, drink, items that can spoil, weapons and flammable or toxic materials is strictly prohibited.
  • After carrels are assigned, assignments will not be changed. The occupants must resolve any scheduling conflicts.
