Studies have shown students and researchers often consult search engines when initiating their research, and Wikipedia is one of the top resources to appear in a search engine results page for many queries. Currently, there are entries in Wikipedia with subject matter relating to existing open access UCLA digital collections, but they lack external links to our collections. Providing Wikipedia external links from appropriate entries to the digitized collections would increase visibility, simplify access to the digital collections, and improve the researcher's information seeking experience. We also seek to foster future Wikipedia editors, the authoritative resource process, and the Library's role as custodian of our cultural heritage and their partner in the open access initiative.

To create open access-aware Wikipedia editors, UCLA Library will host this Wikipedia Edit-a-Thon, with the hands-on task of assigning a list of open access Digital Collections as external links to appropriate entries and creating entries or improving existing entries on topics as the opportunity arises.
