Don Ellis (1934 - 1978) was an American Jazz trumpeter, drummer, composer and bandleader. Known for his use of non standards meters, Ellis is probably best remembered for the use of his works in films like The French Connection (1971) and Whiplash (2014). The UCLA Ethnomusicology Archives holds the Don Ellis Library and Collection. "Strawberry Soup", part of the Don Ellis Collection, features a simple theme that is surrounded by intricate metric flucuations and complex key variations.
