  1. CALL TO ORDER
The meeting was called to order at 1:15 p.m.

  2. APPROVAL OF MINUTES FROM FALL MEMBERSHIP MEETING (Nov. 8, 2002)
    The minutes were approved.

  3. ANNOUNCEMENTS: Introduction of the Candidates (Rita Costello)
Rita Costello thanked Nominating Committee members for their efforts: Julie Kwan, Alan Michaelson, Suzanne Shellaby, and Elaine Shiner. Then she introduced the slate of candidates and called for nominations from the floor. After a nomination was received for Chair Elect, a motion to approve the amended slate was accepted by consensus. The revised slate is:

    • Chair Elect: Ellen Broidy, Bruce Whiteman
    • Secretary: Beth Feinberg, Heidi Sandstrom
    • Representative: Ruby Gutierrez, Rhonda Lawrence, Libbie Stephenson, Ken Wade

  4. LAUC-LA Committee 2001/2002 Mid-Year Reports and Discussion (Full reports are available). Below are some additional comments.)
  • Chair's Report: Maureen Russell

  • Committee on Library Plans and Policies: Elaine Adams
The Committee fulfilled two charges: a letter regarding implementation of the Electronic Resources Database; and a recommendation of development of an option/procedure for internal postings.

  • Committee on Professional Governance: Ruby Gutierrez
Ruby Gutierrez invited LAUC-LA members to send her ideas for a set of questions regarding hires within or outside the librarian series.

  • Committee on Research and Professional Development: Adrienne Adan
Adrienne Adan announced the recipients of mini-grants: Beth Feinberg, Lisa Kernan, Marsha Kmec, Louise Ratliff, Barbara Schader, and Itibari Zulu.

From now on, the Committee plans to implement a Calendar change, issuing a Call in early summer for the following year's cycle. This change will afford future recipients a longer period to use their funds.

  • Committee on Programs: Joan Flintoff-Lopear
Joan LoPear invited mini-grant recipients and others to sign up for a LAUC-LA program on Projects and Research Sharing.

  • Committee on LAUC-LA Distinguished Librarian Award: Ruby Bell-Gam
Ruby Bell-Gam noted the discrepancy between the name of the Committee (LAUC-LA Distinguished Librarian Award) and the name of the award (Librarian of the Year). She asked whether LAUC-LA members felt the discrepancy should be resolved. A lively discussion ensued. Conclusion: The difference between the names of the committee and the award is tolerable.

The Committee is developing a survey to determine support for continuing the award in the absence of a monetary prize.

Jan Goldsmith presented the 2000 Librarian of the Year Kate Pecarovich with a belated award. Pecarovich evinced the appropriate fervor.

  • Peer Review Documentation Workshop Committee: Roberta Medford for Keri Botello
Maureen Russell thanked the Committee for this year's Review Initiators' Workshop, the first to be held in over five years.

  • Nominating Committee: Rita Costello
Rita Costello described the difficulties facing the nominating committee this year in pulling together a slate. Over 30 people declined to run, citing workload, lack of experience, or the length of the commitment (three years, for Chair Elect). What should be done?

Maureen Russell, Dora Loh, Esther Grassian, Lise Snyder, and Miki Goral spoke about the importance of this activity and of the role LAUC-LA serves as an advisory group. Russell noted that the Administration does provide $1000 in funding to support LAUC-LA Chairs; this could be used to fund a student assistant.

  • Election Committee: Jennifer Hill

  • Peer Review Committee: Michael Oppenheim
Noting that 27 actions have been completed, Michael Oppenheim thanked the Peer Review Committee members for their hard work.

  • Ad Hoc Task Force on Communication: Maureen Russell
Maureen Russell thanked Pat Hawthorne for her help. Recently, Pat Hawthorne and Karen Murray met with Terry Ryan to discuss Zoomerang, a tool for creation, deployment, and analysis of surveys. Karen Murray will be entering the survey questions into Zoomerang. Gloria Werner liked the idea and suggested that it could be done every few years.
  1. STATEWIDE REPORTS (Full reports are available.) Below are some additional comments.)

    • Committee on Committees, Rules and Jurisdiction: Ken Wade
After some discussion, the Committee decided to retain its current structure.

    • Committee on Cultural Diversity: Jain Fletcher for Judy Consales
Jain Fletcher reported on a meeting held April 15th. The Committee is in the process of testing a web site that provides five services: (1) Resources on diversity (pathfinders); (2) Charges, rosters, and reports; (3) Special reports produced during the last 10 years; (4) Articles on diversity; and (5) Links to local LAUC activities. The Committee reviewed a list of recommendations for action. Next, the Committee discussed a proposal for a quarter-time Diversity Coordinator. The meeting concluded with a round-robin where members shared information about Diversity Committees at each of the campuses.

    • Committee on Professional Governance: Ruby Gutierrez for Rhonda Lawrence
Ruby Gutierrez answered questions on behalf of Rhonda Lawrence regarding the status of a questionnaire that the Committee is developing.

    • Committee on Research and Professional Development: Janice Matthiesen
The Committee considered nine grant proposals. Recommendations have been sent to the Office of the President for consideration.

  2. NEW BUSINESS
    • LAUC Statewide Spring Assembly 2002 at UCLA
Norma Corral encouraged all LAUC-LA members to attend the Spring Assembly to be held May 3, 2002. Check the LAUC Statewide web site for the agenda. Two presentations on Information Literacy will be given in the afternoon by Susan Curzon and by Esther Grassian.

    • University Librarian Search Committee: Eleanor Mitchell
Eleanor Mitchell provided a status report on the Search Committee activities. The Search Committee has met with the Academic Senate Committee on Library, with a group of 12 library staff members, and with Gloria Werner to identify issues. The Committee will also invite some external people to discuss future directions in libraries.

  3. INTRODUCTION OF THE 2001/2002 LAUC-LA DISTINGUISHED LIBRARIAN OF THE YEAR
Ruby Bell-Gam introduced the Librarian of the Year for 2001/2002: Alice Kawakami:

As College Library’s Digital Services Librarian, Alice Kawakami has worked tirelessly during the last two years to establish and develop the UCLA Library’s digital reference service. She began working on this service in spring, 2000. In spite of daunting obstacles, including major access problems with the software, skepticism toward the whole idea of digital reference service, and technical problems with the California Digital Library, (CDL), Alice persevered, believing that such a service would be greatly beneficial to library users. A year later, in spring, 2001 UCLA’s digital reference service was successfully launched with three librarians from College Library and one from the Young Research Library. Alice’s role as trouble-shooter expanded to cover all UCLA participants and she took on the responsibility for tracking use of this new service, keeping statistics, recruiting new librarians to participate in an expanded service in fall 2001, and communicating with all essential people regarding the new service.

What is amazing is that Alice took on all this responsibility in addition to her regular College Library duties.  It was not until fall 2001, when digital reference was well on its way to being an established public service, that Alice received some release time from her reference and teaching responsibilities at College Library to handle the extraordinary workload associated with the ongoing development and improvement of this service.

Although Alice has enjoyed the support of her supervisors and colleagues, it is truly due to her own vision and determination that the UCLA Library's digital reference service is recognized throughout the United States as cutting edge and as a model worth emulating. In recognition of her leadership, dedication, hard work, innovation, courage and creativity as a people’s librarian, and her invaluable contributions to the teaching and research missions of UCLA, we are very pleased to name Alice Kawakami the 2002 LAUC-LA Librarian of the Year.

  1. ADJOURNMENT
The meeting adjourned at 2:43 p.m..

Respectfully submitted,
Valerie Bross
LAUC-LA Secretary 2001/2002
