How-to Guides...
MLA International Bibliography
The premier literary criticism database. Covers articles published from 1969-present. Includes materials in the areas of literature, languages, linguistics, folklore, literary theory, and film criticism.
Literature Online
Good for finding literary criticism and sources like KnowledgeNotes Student Guides for major works, the Dictionary of Literary Terms and more. Also has biographical info on authors, full text of many older literary works, and links to selected websites. Includes ABELL (Annual Bibliography of English Language and Literature) from 1920 to the present.

Literature Resource Center
Provides access to biographies, bibliographies, and critical analyses of authors from every age and literary discipline. A good starting point, particularly if you're looking for overviews of an author's life or works.

Project Muse
Covers 1990-present. Full text of about 250 scholarly journals in the arts, humanities, and social sciences. You can use Library of Congress Subject Headings to search. (This means that a subject search that works in the Library Catalog will probably also work well in Project Muse). Links to JSTOR for older articles. more info

JSTOR
Covers 1845-present. Full text content of core journals in the social sciences and humanities. A basic keyword search might pull up many irrelevant articles (it searches for words anywhere in the article), so using the advanced search screen will help. more info
Expanded Academic ASAP 1980 - present
A general database which covers all kinds of topics (arts/humanities, social sciences, sciences, etc.), it’s a good starting point for various topics and multidisciplinary research (like literary criticism and psychoanalysis or ethnic studies). Great for finding book reviews and some literary criticism. Includes both scholarly and popular publications, so if you need peer reviewed articles, be sure to limit your search to "peer-reviewed publications."
Gale Literary Index
The online reference source locates biographical information about authors and literary criticism in Gale publications. To see which sources can be found in College Library and other UCLA libraries, consult the list of publications. more info
