Finding Call Numbers for Journals
Using the UC Melvyl Catalog
- In the Address/Location box, type http://melvyl.cdlib.org. Then press Enter.

- Select one of the Journal Title search options from the pull-down menu.
- Type the title of the journal in the search box. For abbreviated titles, use the truncation symbol (*) as needed. Remember: You must have a minimum of three letters to truncate.

- Click

- Click Full Record for each title of interest.
- Click UC Los Angeles to see library location and call number.

- Circulation status is not available for journals in the Melvyl Catalog at this time. To find out if the journal volume and/or issue you want is available, please use the UCLA ORION2 catalog at http://orion2.library.ucla.edu. For more help using the ORION2 catalog, see Finding Call Numbers for Journals Using ORION2 at http://www.library.ucla.edu/biomed/quickguides/orion_call_journals.html.
- Note: For single-word journal titles, such as Science or Nature, click Browse on the yellow navigation bar at the top of the screen. Select the Journal Title begins with option and type the name of the journal.

- Click

- Click on the link to the title you want. You may see multiple results. When you have located the title you need, click on Full Record and proceed as above in steps 6 and 7.
- Click Quit to end your current Melvyl Catalog session.
- Use the stack directory to go to the appropriate stack level in the library.
Note: If you do not find the volume on the shelf:
Bound journals are arranged by call number on stack levels 1–3 and 5–7. Unbound journal issues are located in the Journal Reading Room and are arranged by call numbers also. Hint: Journals usually are arranged alphabetically by title.
- Check the book trucks waiting to be reshelved on the appropriate floor.
- Check ORION2 to see if the volume is checked out or in a special location.
- Ask the staff at the circulation desk to check the sorting area.
- Check the book trucks waiting to be sorted on stack level 4.
- If you have checked for the volume on two separate days, place a search for the material using the online search form at http://www.library.ucla.edu/services/osform.html.
