The John C. Liebeskind History of Pain Fund

John C. Liebeskind, M.D.Friends and colleagues of John C. Liebeskind are invited to contribute to the John C. Liebeskind History of Pain Fund in the UCLA Louise M. Darling Biomedical Library. This fund will serve to continue Dr. Liebeskind’s efforts to document and preserve the history of pain research and pain therapy in the post-World War II era. Dr. Liebeskind was elected to the National Academy of Sciences in 1995. He was a founding member of both the American Pain Society (APS) and the International Association for the Study of Pain (IASP), a past president of APS, and president-elect of the IASP until his illness forced him to resign.

In 1994, Dr. Liebeskind proposed a joint project with the History and Special Collections Division of the Biomedical Library to develop a history of pain collection. The Liebeskind Collection was officially inaugurated on November 8, 1995 and includes oral histories with scientists, physicians, psychologists, and other professionals in the field of pain; personal papers of pain pioneers such as William K. Livingston (1892–1966) and John J. Bonica (1917–1994); and archival records of pertinent societies such as APS and IASP. Income from the Liebeskind Fund will be used for the acquisition, preservation, and access to library materials in all formats (print, digital, multimedia) in the history of pain and to promote research on the history of pain.
