The Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act of 1996: Its Implications for History of Medicine Collections.

The theme of the program at the ALHHS 2003 Annual Meeting in Boston was “HIPAA and History – The Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act – and its Impact on Medical History Research and Collections.” Presenters included Stephen Novak, (see his presentation on the Website,) Diane E. Lopez and Dr. Joel Braslow. Additional comments were prepared by Nancy McCall and Joanne E. Pollack.

From the President

Jodi Koste thanked Jack Eckert, Ginny Hunt and Tom Horrocks for their efforts on behalf of the Annual Meeting. She also discussed bylaws changes, a proposal to create the office of Past-President for ALHHS and the importance of the ALHHS listserv. Jodi thanked outgoing Steering Committee members Lucretia McClure and Stephen Greenberg for their hard work and dedication to ALHHS.

ALHHS Steering Committee Minutes

Minutes of the Steering Committee Meeting were prepared by Micaela Sullivan-Fowler. The standing and Ad Hoc committee and other reports were summarized. Other business discussed included the membership directory, the proposed budget, membership development and a proposal to create the office of Immediate Past-President.

ALHHS Business Meeting Minutes

The program and the awards presentations in the morning were attended by the Medical Museums Association (MeMa.) Pat Gerstner received a Career Service Award from MeMa, Lucretia McClure received the ALHHS Lisabeth M. Holloway Award for distinguished service and William Helfand received the ALHHS Recognition of Merit Award. The meeting program followed on the topic of HIPAA and its impact on medical history research and collections. Old and new business was conducted following lunch and included Micaela’s welcome to the 2004 ALHHS meeting in Madison.

ALHHS Financial Report

The Treasurer’s report was presented by Micaela Sullivan-Fowler.

Proposed Bylaws Revision

A proposal has been made to create the office of Immediate Past-President for ALHHS.
